4 Ways to Recognize a Doctor in Your Life This Doctors’ Day

Wednesday, March 27, 2019 9:08 AM

How is prior NorthShore patient Jacquelyne DenUyl skiing nine months after knee replacement surgery and keeping up with her friends? DenUyl credits her speedy recovery to Lalit Puri, MD, Orthopaedic Surgeon at NorthShore, who was with her every step of the way from pre-op to post-op and rehabilitation therapy.

In recognition of National Doctors’ Day on Saturday, March 30th, DenUyl is honoring Dr. Puri and his entire team for their hard work, superior care and for helping her get back to her active lifestyle.

“I’m an avid skier and hiker, and my knee needed to be replaced. I’m in my mid-60s but he took me seriously as an athlete,” says DenUyl. “For months after surgery, I was back to hiking national parks—and nine months later, I was skiing expert runs in Colorado. I even raced the NASTAR course, proudly earning a bronze medal. One year later, I was traveling to Antarctica!”

Falling on March 30th each year, Doctors’ Day was established to recognize physicians, their hard work, and their contributions to society and the community. Doctors’ Day is a good time to recognize the doctors who have played a valuable role in your healthcare.

“I wanted to recognize Dr. Puri and my entire care team, so I made a donation in their honor last year during National Doctors’ Day—to thank them for helping me get back to my active lifestyle,” adds DenUyl.

Things to do on National Doctors’ Day:

Make a donation. In recognition of the holiday, show appreciation by making a donation to honor a NorthShore physician. Your gift can support an area of your choice, in research or clinical care, or help ensure that exceptional healthcare is available in our community, especially those most vulnerable and at risk. Say “thanks!” Show your appreciation to a doctor simply by saying “thank you,” sending them a card, or posting a shout out on social media about how they have positively impacted your life.

Give a gift. Show gratitude by giving your doctor a red carnation—the symbolic flower of Doctors’ Day. A red carnation was chosen because it symbolizes the qualities of love, charity, sacrifice, bravery and courage.
