Chemotherapy involves chemicals that attack and destroy cancer cells, and are offered alongside radiation and immunotherapy. At the NorthShore Kellogg Cancer Center, our cancer care team offers several forms of chemotherapy; depending on the type and severity of an individual’s cancer, chemotherapy can be administrated in the following methods:
- Intravenous – Injection directly into the vein
- Oral – A pill, capsule, or liquid that’s swallowed
- Intra-peritoneal – Injection into the peritoneal cavity (space in which many of the body’s organs are held)
- Intra-arterial – Injection directly into the cancerous tumor
- Topical – Cream rubbed into the skin
Our oncologists are supported by a team of nurses, pharmacists, social workers, nutritionists, financial advisors and volunteers who ensure that patients are taken care of before, during and after their chemotherapy treatments. Whether a patient needs assistance with coordinating their schedule, writing notes for outside appointments or managing their bills and treatment costs, our team is available to provide support.
Our Outpatient Oncology Pharmacies are located at Evanston, Glenbrook and Highland Park Hospitals. Each location has specially trained pharmacists who dispense oral chemotherapy and work with each patient care team to monitor side effects or potential adverse reactions to medications. In addition, these clinical pharmacists and nurses can provide pain medication and additional patient support and education.
Additionally, NorthShore’s research team has ongoing studies and clinical trials which are testing new chemotherapy medications, focusing on increasing effectiveness and decreasing side effects. Researchers are also studying genetic markers as part of our ongoing personalized medicine efforts to examine genetic mutations in order to determine options for cancer prevention and to catch cancers at the earliest stages, when treatment is most effective.
