NorthShore Radiation Oncology

Radiation Oncology—also called radiation therapy or radiotherapy—has been a safe and effective treatment option for patients for many years. Technology has advanced rapidly in recent decades and all treatments are calculated to precisely target the tumor and minimize exposure to the rest of the body.

NorthShore Radiation Oncology is committed to ensuring that all patients are treated under the most comprehensive safety guidelines. This culture of safety is seen in all aspects of each patient's care. When treating patients we focus on clinical quality, safety and individualized patient care.

The following are some of the processes we have in place to support our focus:

  1. Pre treatment verification
The physician and two members of the physics staff review and approve all treatment plans.
  2. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Volumetirc Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) pre treatment integrity plan
Each patient's plan, be it IMRT, VMAT SRS, SBRT are reviewed and doses are verified by the physics staff prior to treatment.  All of the IMRT, VMAT, SRS, SBRT treatment plans are loaded into the treatment machine and patient doses are verified  by the physics staff prior to treatment.
  3. Chart Rounds treatment plan review
All treatment plans are reviewed by a team including two radiation oncologist, physics staff, nursing and therapists during the first week of treatment.
  4. Weekly treatment delivery review
The physics staff, therapists and the physician review the treatment delivery on a weekly basis.
  5. Weekly status checks
Patients meet with the nurse and the physician on a weekly basis to discuss their progress.
  6. Daily, monthly and annual physics quality checks
Medical physicists checks the machines functionality, output and accuracy regularly.
  7. Daily patient identification and treatment parameter read back
All patients’ identifications  are checked each day, patient positioning is verified by two therapists and all parameters are checked and read back, by both, prior to treatment initiation.
